Smoking is of course always harmful, but when you start smoking at a young age, it can probably cause major damage, such as an attention disorder, later in life.
Researchers from the VUmc's Neuroscience Campus Amsterdam discovered this during their research into the effect of nicotine †
Concentration problems
The researchers exposed adolescent rats to nicotine . for a period of time † The rats were then tested when they reached adulthood. And what turned out? The Ability to Concentrate appeared to have deteriorated . due to exposure to nicotine and their impulsivity went up considerably.
Nicotine at a young age in rats therefore produces long-term damage on. The study shows that the brain is very vulnerable to addictive substances during puberty , such as nicotine. The rats that only received nicotine as adults did not suffer from lasting problems.
Side note…
Whether these results for the human brain money is difficult to find. Such a study, in which subjects are exposed to nicotine for a short and specific period of time, is difficult to repeat in the same way in humans. According to the researchers, it is quite possible and plausible that when young people start smoking , they have a risk of attention disorders .
