Wearing soft contact lenses for years can cause drooping eyelids. This is apparent from PhD research by ophthalmologist Isabel Bleyen.
The study, which was conducted by the Rotterdam Eye Hospital, involved 35 people with drooping eyelids between the ages of 18 and 50. In nine of them there was a clear association between the drooping eyelids and the wearing of soft contact lenses †
It has been known for some time that hard lenses can have the same effect. This is because the upper eyelid is pulled during the removal of this lens, with the result that the tendon of the muscle in the upper eyelid stretches †
There is still no explanation as to why soft lenses are also a risk , while removing it does not require pulling on the upper eyelid. According to ophthalmologist Bleyen, it could be related to irritation by the lens or contact lens solution or by the way the inside of the eyelid rubs against the contact lens when blinking.
