Few things can be classified as a miracle cure, but exercise is actually one of them. There is no pill on the market that offers all the benefits of an active lifestyle and can remedy all of the above problem areas.
When you exercise, your bones and joints are strengthened, which reduces the risk of bone fractures. You get more muscles, better balance and better coordination. The brain performs better, leading to better memory, increased concentration and improved impulse control. When the heart rate goes up, the heart works, and because the heart is a muscle that can get stronger, the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as a heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure also decrease. You get better blood sugar control and the risk of diabetes is significantly reduced.
The neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin make up a large part of the antidepressants currently prescribed for humans. Dopamine and serotonin make us happy and fight depression. Both neurotransmitters increase during exercise and help combat anxiety. Painkillers are also released into our bodies when we exercise, proteins that, in addition to pain relief, also counteract stress and depression.
Research shows that the risk of developing cancer and dementia also decreases for those who exercise, and in fact decreases exercise reduces the risk of premature death – regardless of the cause of death.
