A poll by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport shows that 60.2% of young women (18-35 years old) more often suffer from depression or signs of depression in winter. Talking about it contributes to recovery. More than 70% of them find it difficult to start the conversation themselves because they do not want to burden others with this. At the same time, friends and family often avoid the topic because they are afraid of hurting the other person, so that the situation is not always discussed or discussed late.
Women are twice as likely to develop depression as men. Characteristic signals are:gloom, no longer having fun and being lethargic. Talking about it is the first step to recovery. But the majority of young women find it difficult to raise their own situation. The main reason for this is that they do not want to burden others (71.1%). Still, they would love to vent. The poll shows that 58% would prefer someone from their environment to ask about it and start the conversation. In addition, the vast majority would like to discuss it in a one-on-one conversation (86.6%).
Not all young women with (signs of) depression dare to discuss their situation. This may cause recovery to take longer. Almost all those involved recognize signs (98.6%) of depression, but almost half (45.6%) prefer to wait for someone to bring it up themselves. Bystanders are afraid of hurting the person (37.9%). They also often doubt whether they can help (32.5%) and do not want to be a busybody (30.7%).
