Do you wake up every day with a tickle in your throat and have to constantly sneeze? Then your bedroom is probably a big part of the cause. This is the place where allergies come to life due to moulds, bed bugs and house dust mites. With the following tips you can ensure that you can enjoy your bedroom with peace of mind – and with an open nose.
Allergens build up in the seams of your bedding. So make sure to wash your bedding regularly and thoroughly to avoid getting up with a runny nose. Wash your bedding at 60 degrees to get all the dirt, sweat, skin cells, oils and dust out. Nothing is more comfortable than a clean bed, don't you think?

While we're on the subject of bedding, take a closer look at the type of bedding you sleep under every night. That is not entirely unimportant in the fight against allergens. Materials such as cotton, wool, bamboo and microfibre are resistant to dust mites and mildew. Do you want to be absolutely sure that your bedding is no longer giving you the creeps and are you willing to invest in it? Then choose silk bedding. Silk is the most hypoallergenic and is also better for your skin and hair.
Do you want to go one step further? Then purchase covers that completely keep the dust out. You can put these covers with a zipper over your pillows, mattress and box spring to ensure that dust mites cannot move.
Tip:your pajamas also count as a cover, but for your skin. So make sure you wash it regularly and preferably with hypoallergenic detergent.
The right air filter or ventilation system can be a useful tool in your fight against allergies. Look for an air purifier with a HEPA filter for optimal removal of dust, pollen and mold spores in the room. This also prevents you from having to sleep with your windows open, because that means more pollen can enter your bedroom
Is your whole room full of stuff and is there clothing all over the floor or over chairs? Then consider tackling this thoroughly and cleaning up a lot. Everything that collects dust also attracts dust mites. Think especially of cuddly toys, pillows, chairs and extra blankets. Books also attract a lot of dust. So preferably move your bookcase to another room and keep it on that one book that is on your bedside table for inspiration and entertainment.
Does your bedroom have carpet on the floor? Then be very thorough and consistent with vacuuming your room. Preferably do this with a mouth cap on and do not vacuum just before going to bed. Then the fabric has time to settle down again before you go to bed. If this still doesn't work, it might be worth having a wooden or laminate floor installed, because less dust particles will remain in it. It might also be better not to put a rug on the floor of your bedroom…
Research shows that an unmade bed works better against bed bugs than a made one. Bed mites prefer to live in warm, moist places, such as bedding, which is neatly placed under the many extra decorative pillows. By not making your bed, you ensure that the bed bug dries out and dies. It also gives you a good excuse to roll out of bed in the morning without looking back.
