Symptoms

First, it is important to consider the symptoms. Do you have a lot of pain and vision problems? Then it is important to visit a doctor.

Conjunctivitis occurs when the white part of your eye becomes irritated. There are many blood vessels in this white part. In case of inflammation, these swell and become visible. Other features include:

  • Redness
  • Increase in the discharge of eye crusts
  • Itching
  • Tears
  • A feeling of grains of sand in your eye

Is your eye watery and red? Then it could be something else that presents itself as conjunctivitis. For example, you can get dry eyes from sitting in front of the computer all day or get irritated by a windy environment. Moisturizing eye drops can relieve this redness.

Virus

A common eye infection is adenovirus. This is a cold virus that can strike your eyes. Herpes can also cause the inflammation in your eyes.

Bacteria

This is the most common cause of conjunctivitis, often due to rubbing the eyes with dirty hands. In most cases, a bacterial infection heals on its own.

Treatment

No antibiotics are prescribed for the treatment of the inflammation, but you usually get eye drops that have an anti-inflammatory effect. Most bacterial conjunctivitis go away on its own. Usually it takes about five days. Do you want to speed up the treatment? Then ask your doctor for eye drops. Do you have someone close to you with conjunctivitis? Then do not use the same towel and wash your hands well after coming into contact with someone who has conjunctivitis.
