Most Dutch people are not very familiar with the different forms of skin cancer. 80 percent have heard of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, but there are more forms.
The lesser-known skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, is more than six times more common than melanoma. Yet only 42 percent of Dutch people know this cancer.
In basal cell carcinoma, a slowly growing pink, skin-colored or light brown bump develops on the skin. Sometimes small blood vessels can be seen. Basal cell carcinomas can be treated well, but often a few years of monitoring is chosen for safety.
