Children whose mother smokes during pregnancy have an increased risk of being overweight than children whose mother does not ingest nicotine during pregnancy.
This is the conclusion of Erasmus MC scientists based on data from a large-scale Generation R study among five thousand children. We looked at the influence that smoking of both parents during pregnancy has on the growth of the child after birth.
Risk of being overweight
Mothers who continued to smoke during pregnancy were 50 percent more likely to have an overweight child on later age. Children of mothers who stopped smoking during pregnancy, or children of fathers who smoked had none increased risk of being overweight †
