The number of egg cells in women drops drastically from birth.
Research by the Universities of Edinburgh and St Andrews on women's eggs has shown that by the age of 30, women have only 12 percent of their eggs left † After their fortieth birthday this is even only three percent †
When a woman is born she has almost two million eggs , so this number drops significantly over her lifetime.
With the knowledge from the research, women with cancer can be better guided † For example, the women can have their eggs frozen before being treated for their illness. Due to the chemotherapy that many cancer patients have to undergo, women can be infertile women can still try to have children after the treatment by freezing the eggs.
