A study provided a comprehensive overview of pesticide products used in the home. This also concerns the conditions of use of these products as well as user profiles. However, the results obtained by ANSES are rather worrying.
In a press release dated October 7, 2019, the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) gave the results of its study Pesti'home. This is the first nationwide study on the use of pesticides in the home. As part of this research, more than 1,500 households were interviewed and more than 5400 identified products.
However, ANSES has reviewed the pesticides available for sale to individuals . The least we can say is that there is everything! It is mainly a question of getting rid of insects of all kinds, rodents, fungi but also parasites and other molds. In addition, it was also a question of establishing the profile of the users and knowing more about their use of these products.
According to ANSES, 75% of households surveyed used at least one pesticide in the year preceding the study. Among these households, 84% used an insecticide – the most widely used product. Among these insecticide users, there are those who use products against flying insects (up to 40%) and crawling insects (28%). We should also mention people using veterinary products for the treatment of parasites in pets.
Then we have herbicides and other outdoor plant disease control products. However, these products are used by nearly 1/5th of households having an outdoor space at home. Another example is human skin repellents, such as mosquito repellents, which are used by 12% of households.
Three typical user profiles have been identified by ANSES:weak, strong and very strong users. In the first case, these are users dealing very little against pests and mostly living in the city. The second category mainly includes pet owners of company. Finally, the very heavy users of pesticides make multiple use of them , inside and outside as well as on themselves to protect themselves from insects.
ANSES also communicated its recommendations. This concerns in particular information for the general public regarding the use of pesticides in the home. It also discusses the measures to be taken in certain cases in terms of health and safety, as well as the recycling of products.
