You take a bite of ice cream and suddenly get a stabbing headache. How is that possible, and what can you do about it?
How do ice cream headaches arise?
To know how to combat the 'ice cream headache', it is important to know how it occurs:the cold stimulates the back of your mouth. This causes your blood vessels to constrict. When your blood vessels widen again, too much blood flows to your head and that causes the stabbing headache.
What can you do for an ice headache? The trick is to keep your mouth as warm as possible so that your blood vessels don't constrict and relax again. You can do this by holding your tongue against your roof or taking a sip of warm water. Unfortunately, the trick doesn't work for everyone.
