Researchers from the Erasmus Medical Center have found nine genes that are related to conduction disorders in the heart.
The conduction system of the heart provides a regular heart rhythm † If there is a disturbance in this conduction system, you speak of a cardiac arrhythmia † Researchers found nine genes that affect the conduction system, and found that five of these genes significantly increase the chance of a change in heart rhythm. This causes atrial fibrillation , the most common heart rhythm disorder.
With this discovery, the researchers have a better idea of the origin of cardiac arrhythmias and can new medication are being developed. Patients are also better able to receive tailor-made medicines.
